2020-2021 was a productive time for creating art and experimenting with multi-color block prints. I set up a little printmaking studio space in an old barn-style shack in 2021. If you would like to view art I made before 2020, you can find that here.

Familiars
2021
In medieval folklore, Familiars were creatures that assisted the cunning folk. This print features some of my favorite wildlife: Salamander, Hawk, Pine Marten, Squirrel, Gray Fox, Screech Owl, Raccoon, and Turtle.
Printing a finely detailed pen-drawing-esque block is always a challenge, the blue mille-flora block specifically gave me the most trouble because of the large gaps that the paper wanted to fall into and collect “chatter”. Chatter is the printmaker’s term for unintended marks caused by raised ridges in carved-away areas that collect ink. As an aesthetic choice, I avoid as much chatter as possible, although every print I make will have small signs that it is indeed handmade art.

Tree Foxes
2021
Grey Foxes are small foxes and the most basal Canid. They used to be the predominant fox species in N. Amer., but are out-competed by the larger Red Foxes. Grey Foxes are equipped with claws and paws to climb trees. Although Red Foxes may climb trees, it’s very rare.
Grey Foxes are still the predominant fox species in certain parts of the Pacific Northwest.

Vaux’s Swift
2020
Bordered by their favorite food (parachuting spiders and termites), this Vaux’s Swift takes a rare moment to perch.
This print my first multi-color block print using Ternes-Burton registration pins to line up the blocks. Behind the Vaux’s Swift there is the tiniest split fount rainbow. This was ambitious due to the size (less than an inch) and the curve of carved piece.

Schemer
2021
Raccoons are well-known for their mischievousness. The title “Schemer” is a reference to this, and a reference to my mom, who loves raccoons and happens to be nicknamed “Schemer”.
